Target Calling Guide

Learn when and how to call targets for maximum team efficiency

Target Calling Fundamentals

Target calling is the art of directing your team's focus for maximum efficiency. Good target calling can turn mediocre players into a coordinated killing machine, while poor calling wastes cooldowns and loses games.

Core Target Calling Principles

  • Clear Communication: Use simple, unambiguous callouts
  • Decisive Leadership: Make quick decisions and stick to them
  • Situational Awareness: Consider cooldowns, positioning, and win conditions
  • Adaptation: Change targets when situations change

General Target Priority

1
Isolated Targets

Enemies separated from their team, out of position, or without defensive cooldowns

2
Low Health Enemies

Targets below 50% health that can be finished quickly

3
High-Value Targets

Healers, key DPS, or classes that counter your strategy

4
Convenience Targets

Enemies that are easy to reach and pressure consistently

Who Should Call Targets?

Designating the right player as target caller is crucial for team success. Different roles have different advantages and limitations as callers.

Healer as Caller

Best game overview, can see all positioning and cooldown usage. Recommended for most teams.

DPS as Caller

Good damage assessment and burst timing. Can work but may get tunnel vision.

Multiple Callers

Leads to confusion and conflicting commands. Avoid except for specific callout roles.

Caller Responsibilities

  • Target Selection: Choose the optimal target based on game state
  • Timing Coordination: Call for burst windows and defensive cooldowns
  • Positional Awareness: Direct team positioning and movement
  • Adaptation: Change strategies based on enemy actions

Communication System

Target "Priest" / "Mage" / "Warrior"
Swap "Swap mage" / "Back to priest"
Burst "Go go go" / "Burst now" / "Kill"
Defensive "Spread" / "Pillar" / "Reset"

When and How to Swap Targets

Target swapping is a critical skill that separates good teams from great ones. Knowing when to change targets and when to stick to your current target can determine the outcome of matches.

✅ When TO Swap Targets

Enemy Uses Major Defensive

Divine Shield, Ice Block, or other immunity effects make the target temporarily untouchable

Better Target Becomes Available

Enemy overextends, uses trinket, or becomes isolated from their team

Current Target Gets Major Heals

Large heals or HoT stacks make continuing current target inefficient

Positional Advantage on Different Target

New target is out of position while current target reaches safety

❌ When NOT to Swap Targets

Minor Healing or Shields

Small heals or absorb effects that can be overcome with continued pressure

Panic Swapping

Changing targets frequently without clear reasoning leads to wasted damage

Low Health Targets

Switching away from targets below 30% health unless they become completely untouchable

During Burst Windows

When cooldowns are active and damage is flowing, commit to the current target

Target Selection vs Common Comps

vs Healer + DPS: Usually target healer to apply mortal strike effects and mana pressure
vs Double Healer: Target DPS to prevent them from setting up kills while healers outlast you
