Complete Guide from Beginner to Duelist (2200+)
Mage Identity
Mages are the burst and control masters of TBC. You lock down enemies with Polymorph and Frost Nova, then obliterate them with Shatter combos. Master the art of kiting and burst windows to dominate arena.
Polymorph King
10s CC on its own DR - chain Polys to control fights
Shatter Combos
Frost Nova + Ice Lance = 3x damage, instant kills
Ice Block
Full immunity, clears all debuffs, Cold Snap for 2nd block
Counterspell
10 second school lockout - best interrupt in TBC
Hidden Mechanics
Shatter Mechanics
Ice Lance and Frostbolt deal 3x crit damage to FROZEN targets. Frost Nova + Ice Lance is your bread and butter.
Polymorph Heals Target
Poly heals 6% HP per second. Don't Poly to "stop damage" - only for CC!
Cold Snap Reset
Resets ALL Frost cooldowns including Ice Block. You can block twice per fight!
Counterspell = 10s Lockout
Longest lockout in TBC. Land CS on healer = 10 seconds of free damage.
Blink Breaks CC
Blink breaks stuns, roots, and snares. Save it for Intercept/Kidney Shot.
Water Elemental Freeze
Pet Freeze is OFF-GCD. Cast Frostbolt, then Freeze mid-cast for guaranteed Shatter!
Pro Tips & Tricks
The Shatter Combo
Frost Nova > Ice Lance > Fire Blast > Cone of Cold. All hit frozen target for massive damage.
Pet Freeze During Cast
Start Frostbolt > Pet Freeze mid-cast > Frostbolt lands on frozen target = Shatter!
Double Block
Ice Block > Cold Snap > Ice Block again. You have 20 seconds of immunity per fight.
Juke Counterspell
Stop casting at 80% to bait enemy CS. They waste their interrupt, you get free casts.
Spellsteal Priority
Steal: Icy Veins, Power Infusion, Bloodlust, HoTs. Costs lots of mana - be selective!
Ice Barrier Always Up
Pre-barrier before gates open. Refresh every 30s. Essential vs melee.
Water Elemental Usage
Water Elemental
45 Second Duration- Freeze: AoE root, OFF-GCD!
- Waterbolt: Extra damage
- Use during burst windows
- Cold Snap resummons it!

Common Mistakes
Wasting Blink
Don't Blink to close distance. Save it for escaping stuns/roots!
Early Ice Block
Don't panic block at 60% HP. Block when you NEED immunity or to clear debuffs.
No Ice Barrier
Barrier should be up 100% of the time vs melee. Refresh every 30s!
Casting into CS
Juke your casts! Stop at 80% to bait their Counterspell, then cast freely.
Standing Still
You're squishy - always kite, use pillars, stay at max range!
Forgetting Pet Freeze
Water Elemental Freeze is OFF-GCD! Use it during Frostbolt casts!
Win Conditions
Shatter Combo Kill
Nova/Pet Freeze > Frostbolt > Ice Lance = massive burst. Stack crits to one-shot squishies.
Poly Chain Control
Keep healer in Poly while your team kills. Re-sheep instantly when it breaks. No DR on Poly!
Icy Veins Burst
Pop Icy Veins when healer is CC'd. 20% haste = faster Frostbolts = more Shatters = dead target.
Outlast with Kiting
Endless slows + roots + blinks = melee can't touch you. Eventually they make mistakes.

Positioning & Pillar Play
The Kite & Shatter Pattern
Never let melee sit on you. Kite, root, burst, escape. Repeat.
vs Melee
Kite in circles around pillars. Nova when they connect, Blink away, repeat.
vs Casters
Stay at max range. Juke their CS, then free cast. LoS their damage.
Poly Positioning
Poly INTO open space. If they run behind pillar, your CC is wasted.
Block Timing
Block when LOW or to clear debuffs. Don't panic block at high HP.
Cooldown Trading Framework
Arena is won by making better trades. Your cooldowns vs their cooldowns.

Win Condition
Chain CC into massive burst. Sap healer, Poly, then kill DPS in one stun. Fast games - win in opener or reset.
Opening Strategy
- Rogue Saps healer from stealth
- You pre-cast Frostbolt on DPS
- Rogue opens: Cheap Shot -> Kidney Shot
- You Poly healer after Sap (chain CC)
- Full Shatter combo during stuns
Kill Setup
- CC Chain: Sap -> CS -> KS -> Poly -> Blind
- Shatter during stuns = guaranteed crits
- Save CS for healer trinket
- Rogue + your burst = dead target
Tips & Tricks
- Coordinate: "Poly in 3..." for chain CC
- If opener fails, reset with Vanish + drink
- Blind doesn't DR with Poly - abuse this!
- You're the CC bot, Rogue is damage
Win Condition
Double CC (Poly + Fear), Mana Burn pressure, and outlast. Priest keeps you alive while you control and burst.
Opening Strategy
- Priest SW:Pain on both enemies
- You Poly one, Priest Fears other
- Mana Burn during CC windows
- Shatter burst when healer is CCd
CC Chain
- Poly -> Fear (different DRs!)
- CS the healer for 10s lockout
- Priest Mana Burn = win condition
- Pain Suppression saves you in emergencies
Win Condition
Lock DoTs + your burst. Chain Poly into Fear for massive CC. Two ranged = hard to train.

- Lock applies full DoTs on kill target
- You Poly healer
- Lock Fears healer after Poly DR
- Shatter burst during Fear

Cyclone + Poly chains for endless CC. Druid keeps you alive with HoTs while you burst.
CC Chain
- Poly -> Cyclone (no shared DR!)
- Cyclone -> Poly -> Cyclone
- Near-infinite CC if executed well

Survive opener, AE spam to find stealth, Shatter burst when visible.

Get into dead zone (5-8 yards), CC pet, force Deterrence then burst.
