Line of Sight and Pillar Play

Master LoS mechanics for superior positioning and control

Line of Sight Fundamentals

Line of Sight (LoS) is the most powerful positioning tool in arena. Proper LoS usage can completely negate enemy damage, force repositioning, and create opportunities for your team.

LoS Mechanics

  • Breaks Casts: Moving behind LoS interrupts channeled/cast abilities
  • Prevents Targeting: Cannot target what you cannot see
  • Forces Movement: Enemies must reposition to regain LoS
  • Resets Aggro: Breaks combat and allows drinking/eating

Pillar Humping

Stay just behind cover, stepping out briefly for abilities then immediately back to safety.

Best for: Healers under pressure, casters being trained by melee

Ring Around the Rosie

Continuously circle around a pillar to maintain distance while preventing enemies from getting LoS.

Best for: Kiting melee as ranged classes, buying time for cooldowns

LoS Breaking

Quickly step behind cover to interrupt enemy casts, then immediately step back out.

Best for: Interrupting important enemy abilities without using interrupts

Forced Positioning

Use LoS to force enemies into disadvantageous positions to reach you.

Best for: Making enemies overextend or separate from teammates

Map-Specific LoS Strategies

Each arena map offers different LoS opportunities. Understanding the unique features of each map allows you to maximize positioning advantages.

Nagrand Arena - Four Pillars

Features: Four large pillars in square formation

Strategy: Control the center area between pillars for maximum mobility

Advanced Play: Use diagonal movement between pillars to minimize exposure

Blade's Edge Arena - Open Bridge

Features: Very limited LoS options, mostly open fighting

Strategy: Small pillars provide brief LoS, use for spell interruption only

Advanced Play: Master positioning without LoS dependency

Ruins of Lordaeron - Complex Layout

Features: Multiple levels, tomb, underground sewers

Strategy: Use level changes and tomb for complex LoS plays

Advanced Play: Control high ground for LoS advantage

Map Preference by Comp Type

Caster Control Nagrand > Ruins > Blade's Edge
Melee Train Blade's Edge > Ruins > Nagrand
Balanced Ruins > Nagrand > Blade's Edge

Advanced LoS Techniques

Master-level LoS play involves predicting enemy movement, using LoS offensively, and coordinating with teammates for maximum effect.

Offensive LoS Usage

Split Forcing

Position behind LoS to force enemies to choose between maintaining LoS on you or your teammates.

Creates opportunities for your team to focus fire isolated targets.

Cooldown Baiting

Show yourself briefly to bait enemy cooldowns, then immediately LoS to waste them.

Particularly effective against burst classes with long cooldowns.

Heal Interruption

Use LoS to interrupt enemy heals without using your actual interrupt abilities.

Saves interrupts for more crucial moments while still stopping healing.

Team LoS Coordination

Pillar Sandwich

Team splits around a pillar to attack from multiple angles, preventing enemy LoS usage.

LoS Chain

Team moves together from pillar to pillar, maintaining LoS while advancing position.

False LoS

Pretend to LoS to bait enemy positioning, then step out when they commit to movement.

❌ Predictable LoS Patterns

Always moving the same direction around pillars makes you easy to predict and trap.

❌ Overcommitting to LoS

Staying behind LoS when team needs your damage/healing output.

❌ Poor LoS Entry/Exit

Taking unnecessary damage while moving to/from LoS positions.

❌ Team LoS Splitting

Using LoS that breaks your own team's ability to support each other.
